This prestigious role marks an important step in the evolving process of shaping the future of research excellence assessment in the UK. The is a vital part of the UK’s higher education landscape, used to assess the quality of research in UK universities. It plays a key role in determining the allocation of around £2 billion annually in public research funding. As the REF system evolves, the introduction of the PCE pilot is a groundbreaking initiative designed to expand the definition of research excellence by focusing on the role of people, culture, and the environment in fostering high-quality research across the UK.
The PCE pilot launched in 2024 and aims to develop new criteria for assessing research outputs and impacts, as well as the broader research environment including how universities support and foster diverse research communities. The exercise will involve 40 higher education institutions, with submissions being assessed across a range of REF assessments. Professor Cotton’s involvement, which focuses on Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences, highlights the growing recognition of environmental science’s importance in shaping both the future of research and sustainability.
The PCE pilot panel’s work will feed into the development of REF 2029, which is set to offer an enhanced understanding of what constitutes research excellence in the 21st century. This will be crucial for the ongoing development of policies that promote inclusivity and diversity in research across the UK’s academic institutions.
Professor Debby Cotton brings a wealth of experience to the panel, with an extensive background in environmental science and sustainability research. She is a leading interdisciplinary researcher and has published work on widening participation and inclusivity in research environments. Her role in the REF’s Teaching Excellence Framework also brings a unique perspective on the relationship between research and teaching excellence, making her an invaluable addition to the PCE pilot panel.
“I am honoured to contribute to this important initiative,” said Professor Cotton “The REF pilot represents an exciting opportunity to shape how we recognise and support diverse types of research, researchers and institutions across the UK. I am proud to be representing Marjon on this panel.”
